Flemish Refugee Action (Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen) supports asylum seekers and refugees. We don't do this alone as we have thirty members and a great many enthusiastic volunteers. Together we intensify the pressure on policy and increase awareness among the general public. We also monitor the reception of asylum seekers and are actively involved in integration. We support all those that assist asylum seekers and refugees. And we work around repatriation when necessary.
We strive for humane protection for asylum seekers and refugees. Our guiding principles are the Refugee Convention, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights.
What Do We Do?
The visions and activities of Vluchtelingenwerk are based on four pillars:
1. We increase social support and influence public opinion
Vluchtelingenwerk is a movement. This means that we aim to influence the general public in Flanders in their knowledge, feelings and attitude towards refugees. We do this with our member organisations, other associations and volunteers. Using campaigns, actions, the press and op-ed pieces we want to inform as many Flemish people as possible about the refugee theme and our viewpoints.
2. We put pressure on policy
Vluchtelingenwerk defends the interests of refugees on a daily basis with regard to policymakers at the national, Flemish, European and local level. We critically explain the policy and where necessary formulate standpoints and proposals. We exercise pressure through lobbying, media and actions.
3. We provide support to all those who assist refugees.
Vluchtelingenwerk supports professional and volunteer advisers and counsellors. We do so using expert information, training, publications and skilled helpdesks. Through our projects we develop new working methods for social workers, counsellors and authorities.
4. We encourage cooperation
Vluchtelingenwerk mobilises associations and individuals. Together we undertake action and improve the quality of the support.
Make a donation
We use each donation to defend the rights of refugees and asylum seekers. We provide them with shelter. We assist them in the asylum procedure and in building a new life. Make a donation and give refugees the chance of a safe life.
You can make a one-off donation by making a transfer to our Triodos account: BE06 5230 8056 2922 (BIC: TRIOBEBB). You can also donate online using the link provided below. Donations of EUR 40 and over a year are tax deductible in Belgium.

Become a volunteer
Every day hundreds of volunteers are active in Flanders helping asylum seekers and refugees. They all do what they can to help: as part of a local volunteer group, during an activity for refugees, as volunteer lawyers, etc. These volunteers help increase support for people who have been forced to flee.
Vluchtelingenwerk aims to support all these volunteers. We do so with training, meetings and network activities, via our helpdesks and advertising in our newsletter E-fugee. Send us your details using the form if you want to be kept informed of future vacancies. If you still have questions, contact us via 02 225 44 00 or via firstname.lastname@example.org.
