Flemish Refugee Action

Who we are

Flemish Refugee Action is an independent, non-governmental organization which defends the interests of refugees and asylum seekers. We work together with over 40 member organizations.
Besides that Flemish Refugee Action can count on the support of numerous enthusiastic volunteers who donate their services to the cause of the refugees.

What we do

Flemish Refugee Action wants to make the public aware of the situation of refugees. We demand the human protection of refugees. The Geneva Conventions, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights are our guiding principles.

The vision and working of the Flemish Refugee Action are based on four big pillars.

We want to widen the social basis and to influence the public opinion

Flemish Refugee Action acts as a movement. That means that we, together with our members and other associations, want to influence the wide public in Flanders in its knowledge, feelings and attitude towards refugees. We want to inform - by means of mediagenic campaigns, creative actions and clear press articles and opinion publishing - as many Flemish people as possible about the refugee topic and our points of view.

We are putting pressure on the policy

Flemish Refugee Action defends on daily basis the interests of refugees in front of policy makers at national, Flemish, European and local levels. We critically follow the policy of the government and formulate, when necessary, points of view and proposals. We put pressure by means of lobby work, the media and actions.

We offer support to everyone who helps refugees

Flemish Refugee Action wants to support professional and voluntary advisers and assistants by means of expert information, training, publications and extensive helpdesks. Through our projects we develop new working methods for helpers, assistants and governments.

We stimulate cooperation

Flemish Refugee Action mobilizes associations and private persons to cooperate and to improve the quality of the assistance.
